Glossary

Here you will find lots of terms related to book folding. I’ve tried to explain them as thoroughly as possible, but in some cases, they will require a deeper dive. For those terms, I have linked to a more detailed explanation with pictures and/or videos.

Book Folding

A craft technique that involves folding the pages of a book to create a three-dimensional design when viewed from the side. A pattern is used that gives you the exact measurement for each page. The pages are carefully measured, marked, and folded to reveal the pattern image. This method transforms old or unused books into decorative pieces of art.

Sheets or Leafs

This refers to a single sheet in a book. Each sheet has 2 page numbers on it, front and back.

Pages

This refers to the number at the bottom or top corner of a sheet. There are 2 page numbers on every sheet.

Total Book Pages

The total number of pages in a book. This includes any unnumbered sheets at the beginning and end of the book. The total number of pages is calculated by finding the last numbered page in your book, and adding the extra sheets after that, and the extra sheets before page 1. Remember that 1 sheet is equal to 2 pages, so be sure to multiply the number of extra sheets by 2. I have also created a calculator to find your total book pages.

Pattern Folds

The number of folds in your pattern. If there are 50 folds, that would be the equivalent of 50 sheets, or 100 pages.
